What an exciting week we have!

First off - weekly homework assignments are suspended until the new year in consideration of all of the activities and family events taking place leading up to the holidays.  Please take this opportunity to connect and recharge as a family.
* An additional note.  Though there will be no weekly classroom assignments, students have been given the opportunity to complete a replacement reading record.  This reading record would replace the mark of a lower reading record and needs to be turned in any time before Dec.20th.   We have discussed this in class and I encourage you to take a look through your child's reading records with them and discuss this possibility as well.   It's ok, and normal, to make mistakes but it's important to take the opportunity for improvement whenever possible :)

Tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon we will be cheering on our athletes at the World Cup events taking place at the Nordic Center.  We will be outside from 1:00-3:00 so please help to ensure that warm clothing is worn.  It may not be too cold out, but even enthusiastic clapping doesn't create a lot of warmth :)    Students are also invited to bring a small thermos with a hot drink with them if they would like.    If you are out and about town tomorrow and you'd like to stop by the Nordic Center we'd be happy to have you join in our cheering!

Thursday - Grade 5 Christmas concert at 7:00.  Students are asked to arrive early.  Mme. Santerre's classroom will be open and available for students to meet in or drop off items.

Friday - half day

* Please let me (and the school) know if you are planning to take your family holidays early.  We will be learning and completing assignments in class up until Dec. 22.  Advance notice helps to make sure there aren't outstanding assignments to complete over the break.

Thank you

The last book orders of 2017 are coming home tonight.  Maybe another gift or stocking stuffer idea?
If you want to make a sneaky gift order you can pay for it online and then send me an email with the item name, number and price.  Don't forget to tell me how to get it to you when it arrives :)

A couple highlights for ideas that have become very popular in class:

  • Wings of Fire series (1-8 available)
  • Raina Telgemeier - graphic novels set
  • I survived (1-15)  This one has become popular with the boys especially
  • There's even one choose your own adventure style book (#59A4), now called "pick the plot"

The turn around is quite short this time so that that orders have time to arrive before the Christmas break.  Tuesday is the deadline for any orders.

Happy reading!

Newest reading records were handed out in class yesterday and are due to be completed by next Thursday, Dec.7th.

Also - in class we have been researching and working hard on our science projects related to how humans impact weather.  Presentations for these need to be complete and ready to go for next Tuesday.

----------------------------------------------
One more thing to start thinking about and collecting.  For a Christmas art project each student needs one small, clean glass jar with the label removed.
A baby food jar, or other small glass jar is ideal

Classroom updates for this week:
This week we will be starting two separate projects that may involve group work.  In Social studies students will be working in a group of 4 - 5 to research, collect and present information about a specific physical region in Canada.  The links to the information for this work can all be found on our classroom blog on the Social page underneath The Canadian Regions.  At the end of this project all students will be asked to self reflect on their group work skills, as well as to confidentially peer assess their group members using the following group work rubric.

In addition, our final weather project relates to how humans have an impact on weather.  This is an individual project, or can be completed with one other partner.

We have talked extensively at school about being positive, contributing members during group work, and I'm so proud to see some young leaders developing in the classroom that work well with everyone and make an effort to stay focused and positive.  A short conversation at home to reaffirm these ideas would be greatly appreciated to help everyone to succeed!

Finally - Reading records will be handed out tomorrow and due back next week.  This week's homework assignment is Math Weekly #6 and is due on Friday as always.

Have a great week everyone!

Just a reminder that poinsettia orders are due to the office by tomorrow.  This fabulous fundraiser can help to spread holiday cheer in your home and it helps to support our music program too!

This week is Bullying Awareness week.  At LGMS we take the time to reflect on how behaviours affect others and we focus on proactive ways to help everyone feel welcome.  Today we had two wonderful grade 8 students come to share ideas of "power" and what gives a person power.  They also left our students with a kindness challenge.  Complete a poster with planned kind activities to complete this week that will help to make everyone at LGMS feel welcome.  Submissions will be placed up around the school and will also get placed into a draw.

Important due dates this week:

Wednesday
- reading records that were handed out last week are due completed (there have already been 6 periods in class to complete these 5 boxes so thanks to those students that have already finished and handed them in)
-weather quiz - please see the page handed out in class, and the questions posted last week to help guide studying

Thursday
-Poinsettia orders are due back to the office

Friday
 - Spelling with assignment #4 is due

Friday, 17 November 2017

We have finished up our Weather unit in Science so next Wednesday students will have a short quiz to show their understanding.  They have some review questions to help them study and we'll also be doing some studying in class.  Parent help with studying is strongly appreciated :)

Here are the main topics (all information is part of the notes and labs that we completed in class - using Google to search up topics will often give information much more advanced then what we need to know in grade 4 and 5 so it's not recommended)
