Just a quick reminder that report cards will be going home with students at noon today.

I also handed out book order forms yesterday. If you are interested in buying books this time please return the forms by next Friday along with a cheque for payment, or better yet, pay online and just send me the order.

Have a great weekend everyone!
Our second book trailer of the week is brought to you by Amelia!

Please remember to keep polishing those math skills tonight with a little studying for our quiz Friday.

In other news our first unique book trailer has been completed and presented by Eli.  Follow the link to see his trailer about Big Nate.  Keep checking back for more trailers students finish them! :)
Don't forget that this Friday is report card day.  Students should be bringing home their report card for you that evening.  If you have any questions, or comments about the new format, please let me know.  This is a new trial for everyone in the district.

In addition, just a note about our grade five math outcomes.  In 5S and 5B we have been moving through the curriculum in a different order so if you have students in both classes you'll notice a difference in the number and type of outcomes.  I focus the first half of the year on developing a very strong base in number understanding and work.  Learning an outcome like large number division can take weeks, where some of the outcomes we will be doing the second half of the year can be mastered in days.  We will all get to the end with the same knowledge, we are just taking different paths along the way.

Here are three important things happening this Friday:

  1. Math weekly # 8 is due
  2. There will be a math quiz to demonstrate skills in adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.  A practice test which looks the same has been handed out to help with studying at home.  Please spend some time polishing these skills with your child this week.
  3. The first set of Book Trailers are due to be presented this Friday by: Amelia, Eli, Jonah and Nicole and Harvy.  Links to these videos will also be posted onto to Blog.

Today's objective in Social was to understand how climate effects how people live, and to understand that there are different climate zones in a country as big as Canada.

Students had 1 hour of class time to work on the assignment Canada's Climate.  This is now a homework assignment if it was not completed.  Please check with your child tonight to see if they are finished.  To show understanding on the long answer questions it is important to explain each answer well.  (internet or binder resources can be used to help)

Please spend some time the end of this week practicing and polishing division skills of big numbers with your child.  (Yes - long division like you know is still one of the strategies that we practice)
We have looked at a handful of different strategies and have been working this week to solidify 1 or 2 good strategies through practice.  Knowing all of the steps is very important.  Explanations of the strategies can be found in the math strategies booklet on the math section of this blog.

Next Monday students will be showing their knowledge on their division "for marks" page.

This week's homework assignment is in Spelling.  Please help your child to study their words and to remember to complete the assignment (#7).  For this assignment students need to first write all ten of their words spelled correctly, then choose the 5 most difficult or unique words to define.  The internet or a dictionary are allowed, but the definitions need to be kid friendly (easy enough to understand).

There are so many types of mixtures in the world. In Chemistry we're focusing on different ways to separate these.  Today's strategy- magnets.

This week's homework assignment is our Math Weekly.  Please take a few minutes to look over this review page with your child before it is due Friday morning.

Do you know what a Non-Newtonian fluid is?  We got to experiment with one this afternoon in Science with Mrs.Skinner's class!

Way to go Smart Cookies.  Great teamwork!!!

The best thing about today:

Anika: We built quinces and Mrs.B fit in ours!
Liam: Our intire group fit in ours.
Amelia: We were outside all day!
Wyatt: We have no homework today.
Gabe.B: We got covered in snow.
Rae: We were a team!
Cameron: I liked building the walls.
Jonah: We got to go into our forts.
Eli: Digging the whole to make the inside was the best part.
Jeremy: Mrs.B and Lynx fir in ours!

During nature explorers this morning we were piling snow to turn into our own quince this afternoon. It's a little chilly but shoveling all that snow is hard work so we stayed pretty warm.  Follow the link to take a look at the video of how one team kept motivated!

I have one fabulous volunteer joining us this Friday for our Nature Explorers field trip.  I would love to have a couple more parents join us.  Can anyone else come play in the snow with us from 10-3 tomorrow?
Show your BES pride this Friday!
Join us in wearing your BES t-shirt this Friday January 8th.

Our next Nature Explorer Field trip is this Friday from 10-3.  We will be learning some winter survival skills and, fingers crossed for some good snow, building a quincy. As always, we need 1 or 2 volunteers.  Please let me know if you are able to come and join us this Friday.

All students will also need full snow gear (snow pants, mitts, toques) as well as a shovel of some kind.  Lunch will be back at the school as usual.

Back to school and back to our regular schedule today which means that weekly homework assignments have re-started.  Please help your child to remember the due date on Friday and take a few minutes to look over what they are working on.

This week our assignment is Spelling assignment #6 (finding small words inside the larger spelling words).
