Exciting March Updates
March has a lot of very exciting things taking place!
On the mornings of March 1 and 3 we will be wall climbing.
On the mornings of March 8 and 10 we will be snowshoeing.  For both activities the bus leaves here at 8:40 and we will be heading back at 11:30.

Thank you to all of my wonderful volunteers. (If anything needs to be changed, please let me know)
Mar.1 Jenna, Ross
Mar.3
Mar.8 Jenna
Mar.10 Stacey, Kerry, Ross

There are still some gaps- if you are able to help out please let me know.  Most importantly - we need a parent volunteer that can pick up snowshoes after 8:00am  on the 8th and 10th (and drop them back afterwards).

Also on March 8th we will be heading to Canmore in the afternoon to cheer on, and enjoy, the World Cup sprint finals! If you are able to join us and to help supervise, there will be room on our bus and we'd love to have you.  Please send me an email or note.

THANKS
Homework tonight - Before our February break students started an online assignment about an industry or resource (from the land, something that can be harvested and sold - not a choice like tourism though that is an industry here).  There are examples on the assignment that students could choose, but they could also pick their own as long as it can be found in Canada.

Students have had 3 hours of class time spread over the week before break and the week after break but some have not used their time in a very focused way.  Please check in with your child to see if they completed the assignment today, or if they still need to be working on this for homework.

Thank you!

A few reminders:

  • Please send back permission forms tomorrow with the $20 for wall climbing and snowshoeing in March.
  • Tomorrow will be our class Valentine's day after recess.  Wear pinks and reds.
  • Today everyone received a copy of their study guide to help them prepare for a short Chemistry quiz coming on the Tuesday after our break. Study skills are learned and I'm sure your child can learn a lot by working with you to develop their own ways to study!

A reminder that Math weekly assignments (#9) are due this Friday.

Permission forms coming home tonight: Also on Friday we are asking to have permission forms returned (please fill in all parts carefully) as well as $20 to cover snowshoeing and wall climbing coming up in March.  Please sign up as well if you are able to to join us.  We'd really appreciate having your help!

Happy Valentine’s day!
This year our school Valentine’s Day will take place on Friday, Feb12th. We will be having our Valentine’s party in the classroom after first recess.  It is the turn of the last half of the class (alphabetically) to bring treats if they’d like to.  If you plan to send a snack or drink, please send individually sized goodies (such as cupcakes instead of a full cake) and accessories like drink glasses if you send juice or hot drinks.

Students are welcome to bring Valentine’s to exchange after recess and are reminded to practice showing respect and caring towards others by making sure not to leave out any classmates.

A couple more pictures of our story telling in the woods.

Teams created an oral story based on the aboriginal style and using facts from the Vermilion  lake area to justify why they came to settle here. Great historical fiction was created today!

Exciting things happening next week:

Monday we will be on a Nature Explorer's hike from 10:00-12:00 to the first Vermillion Lake. Please ensure your child has a good snack for beforehand as well as good walking boots and winter clothing.  We also don't yet have any volunteers joining us, if you could spare a few hours to explore nature with us Monday we would love to have you!

Tuesday there is a guest drummer coming to the school who will be doing a workshop first thing in the morning with our two grade five classes.

Friday is a half day for students followed by a week off while our teachers travel to Calgary Thursday and Friday for our own learning during convention.
Our latest book trailer, brought to you by the fabulous Norah and Rae!
5B - Here is the link for the school surveys.  This can only be filled in with the passwords that BES gets.  I have one for each student.  Please make sure to type the login and password that I gave you carefully.

We've adopted Sweden for the World Cup Events!
We've done a little research into our sponsored country and now we are making plans for designing some unique artwork.  Once finished, our artwork will be displayed in Canmore at Stonewaters and in the team rooms at the Nordic center.  We'll also be heading up to take in the events ourselves in early March!

This Friday we will be attempting to grow our own crystals in Science class.  Students will need a glass jar (a jam sized jar is perfect) and they can also bring a dish towel or cloth to use as a cozy.

Book orders are also due this Friday if you are interested.

WOW!  You will be blown away by the fabulous movie making skills our grade fives have shown on their recent Science videos.  Students were responsible for planning their mixtures, making a script and demonstrating how best to separate their mixtures in a way that made sense, demonstrated their science skills and was interesting for others.  Click on the links below to see the finished product.

Separating with air
Separating with water
Separating with magnets
Separating using a sieve

Math problem solving. Finding your strategy and proving your answer.  5B and 5S.
Could you solve this?
Here are some of the early strategies being worked on by our grade fives.

This week we have 4 new groups preparing their Book Trailers to share by Friday.
Nicole and Harvy, Elora and Anika, Gabe.M and Cameron, as well as Norah and Rae.  Students are reminded that they are turning in 2 items.  The completed video, as well as a well edited script. Check in later this week to follow links to these videos!
I hope that you have all had a fabulous weekend and you had a chance to look through your child's report card.  This is one way that we show learning here at BES, but we've also been busy keeping our portfolios organized and up to date with assignments.  If you would like a closer look at your child's work these portfolios are always available to you.  Just send me and email or note and you can take it home for an evening to look thorough it.
