Just a reminder that this Friday is a half day for students and that there are a few items due to be turned in by Friday as well.
- science "states of matter" posters are now due Friday instead of tomorrow to allow for a little more finishing up before they are turned in.
- also Friday this week's Math Weekly homework assignment is due. Big congrats to all of the Smart Cookies out there that have already turned them in!!

Tonight you should have also seen a mark in agendas /15 for our first, totally online, quiz about the Arctic Region of Canada. Students can access this from their email to show you even more.

Thursday, 24 November 2016

Please come by and join me in the classroom tonight at 6:30.  The front doors will be open.  Come by to introduce yourselves and to learn a little more about my teaching background, to see the great resources available on our blog, and to ask any questions you may have.  I look forward to getting the chance to talk with you.

Additionally, tomorrow is our PJ literacy afternoon.  Students are invited to bring things to make their reading space comfy, their PJs to change into a lunch and a few favorite books to enjoy.  Attached is a link to a checklist and goal setting page that we will be using in the afternoon.

Our first spelling test will also take place tomorrow morning.  This week's dot-to-dot brain activity (assignment #1) is also due at that time.

This Friday is our Pajama Literacy afternoon. It's a time to be comfy and cozy and curl up with a great book or two for a sustained period of time.

Students will be asked to set two specific goals about their reading for the afternoon. A few examples of possible goals:  “I will read one whole book today.”  “ I will read for 20 minutes at a time, and switch between (title of book) and (title of book).” “I will ask myself good questions about my understanding of my book.” “I will make connections to my own life when reading my book.”
Students may change into pajamas in the afternoon, bring teddy bears, pillows, blankets and therma rests to make their reading space more comfortable. Students are also encouraged to bring snacks and their water bottles to stay energized and hydrated throughout the day. As always, student will be encouraged to take body breaks when needed.

What a great day.  I am so proud of everyone in our class!

This afternoon we attempted some reorganization so that we could create and set up class portfolios.  Even though organization can be a struggle, everyone practiced their patience and stayed positive.

These newly created portfolios can be found at the back of the classroom and will contain summative assignments that go towards report cards in the core subject areas.  They are a great way for students and parents to look for growth, or areas for improvement, as the year progresses.  These are always available in the classroom, and please just ask any time if you would like to borrow your child's over night to see how they are doing.  (as a result of this reorganizing, there are also a lot of practice pages from the beginning of the year coming home tonight :)

Welcome to another wonderful week here at LGMS.  A few important dates this week:

Thursday -  I will be hosting an open house in our classroom from 6:30 - 7:15.  If you are able to come by for a 6:30 start I will talk a little about my teaching background and explain how to access resources on our classroom blog.  I would love a chance to get to meet those of you I haven't already caught up with, and I'm here to answer any questions you might have about changes since the transition.  If you aren't able to come by, please let me know how else we can connect at another time.

Friday - This week's homework assignment is spelling.  Studying 10 words, and completing the brain exercise assignment #1.  Students have the assignments explained and shown in their duotang (page two) and they also have their spelling list.  The assignment list is also posted on this blog on the LA resources page.
           - Book orders (handed out by Miss.K) are also due back with a check made out to Scholastic
           - And finally - this Friday we are having a literacy and Pajama afternoon!  Students can bring their comfy PJs to change into at lunch and we'll be curling up with some great books and literacy activities after lunch.  More info. to come.

Friday, 18 November 2016

Today we also spent some time talking about different learning styles and preferences.  These are called multiple intelligences and they can help students to understand their best ways to learn. Please take a look at the results that should have come home, and maybe even try it yourself!

Have a great weekend.
As promised - here are the rest of our terrific weather forecaster.  Everyone has now finished and we will be moving on next to our Chemistry unit.

Congratulations to all of our brave weather forecasters that presented today!

Tuesday, 15 November 2016

This week is bullying awareness week and today we hosted our second group of grade eights presenting on the topics of what bullying is, and how we can help.   Please take a few minutes at home to talk through these important issues as well.

Kindness is catching, please pass it on!

Monday, 14 November 2016

Today was a fantastic day and I am so proud of how well all of our class has handled this transition!

Important notes for this week:
- weather final project presentation will begin Thursday. Please check in with your child to see that they have explained their predictions using Science knowledge, given their predictions for two locations and have a plan for how to present in an engaging way.
- this Friday our first weekly homework assignment, math weekly #1 is due. Once you have seen your child's completed work they can hand it in at any time.

Wednesday, 9 November 2016

I am very happy to be joining the LGMS team and to be working with you and your children this year as we all grow and learn together.  A little information about myself: I have been teaching since 2000 and I have a background in special education and a strong interest in different learning styles and modalities so you will hear about a lot of different ways that we are learning together in our classroom this year!  In addition to other classroom and resource room settings that I have taught from grades 3-8, I have spent over ten years in grade five and I really enjoy the learning that takes place during this year of school.

I know that there will be some changes and questions as we each get to know each other.  If you have a chance to stop in after school in the next week or two, please come by and introduce yourself. I would also like to invite you to join me for an open house in our classroom the evening of Thursday, Nov. 24th from 6:30-7:15. Please stop by to to ask me any questions, or share any information with me, that can help us to have a positive year.

Homework info: In general students should have very little this year.  As long as they are focused in class, there will be enough time at school to get finished.

Each week: We will be continuing with daily reading and reading logs, begun by Miss.K, and in addition there will be one short homework assignment which I’d encourage you to help your child with.  We will alternate between a spelling homework assignment and a math homework assignment. The assignments will be due, and the spelling test will take place, in the morning of the last day of the school week.

1. Spelling - There will be a short assignment/brain activity and a list of 10 words to practice.

2. Math weekly - This assignment is made of 5 math questions, related mainly to our number unit.  Students are welcome to use any strategy (not using a calculator) to help them get their answers.

Homework assignments are meant to help build responsibility and accountability as well as to help students get into the habit of completing some work at home.  I encourage family members to check in with their child.  I also recommend short daily practices at home using math skills (one questions each of + - x ÷ can help build skills and confidence) as well as paired and individual reading.

Finally, advance notice will be given for all tests including study guides and/or practice tests.  Parent help with studying is much appreciated!

You will find all this information and more on my classroom blog which is updated each week.  It will include upcoming assignments, test information and other important details about our classroom.   I also use our Blog and Twitter to post pictures of activities and student generated work. Want to know what we did in school? This is a great way to start those conversations at home. Please check it out! You can even enter your email address to receive blog updates directly. (Although you signed the FOIP agreement upon registration, please let me know if you do not want pictures or student work samples for your child to appear on our Twitter or classroom blog.)

I look forward to meeting you the evening of Nov.24th, if not before.  We are going to have a great year together!
