Scholastic book orders update.
I'm sorry to say that our book orders for this month aren't going to be able to make it here before spring break.  Normally they ship quite quickly, but it looks like they will arrive while we are all on vacation.  I'll get them out to students that ordered right away once we are back.

I'm sorry, I know a new book or two for the break would have been great!

Today in Science we were creating devices that use electricity to create a magnetic field. This handy device allows you to turn on and off your magnet and it is called an electromagnet.  Ours are much smaller then those used in scrap metal yards but we were still able to pick up some everyday school items.  Take a look at these groups that wanted to share how they did.

Upcoming deadlines:
(Please be sure if you are leaving early for spring break that you send me a note so that your child can arrange to have their work completed ahead of time)

  • Friday: Spelling test and assignment #8 is due
  • Friday (or the Monday after spring break) - the next reading record for this week was handed out this morning.  Students can either get a couple of extra reading times done at home to help them complete their record early and hand it in Friday, or they can finish filling it in over the holidays (and take care to not lose it) and hand it in Monday, April17th
Just a quick reminders that we are still missing 5 portfolios in our classroom.  We do add newly completed assignments into our portfolio binders every couple of weeks and we will need to do so again before we break for our spring holidays.  If you still have your son or daughter's portfolio at home I hope that's because you've been spending a lot of time looking at their work in detail, but please send them back as soon as possible.

Check out this video:  http://30daysofbiking.com/pledge-2017

As our roads and trails dry up, here's a chance for students or anyone to take on the 30 day challenge. Pledge to ride your bike every day in April.  Students can pick up a pledge sheet at the LGMS office.
Happy biking!

Check out this great technology contest!  Some of our Smart Cookies will get a chance to begin a submission for this contest on Friday, but if there isn't time in school there's still a chance to try for it.  The deadline isn't until May.

We have begun our Electricity and Magnetism unit in Science.  So far we have been working mainly with magnets and discussing electrical safety, but soon we will be moving on to electricity labs.  Although we have some spare batteries at the school, students are encouraged to bring (and label) two D cell batteries for their own use during experiments and for building their electric car.

Today in Science we were discussing magnetic fields.

  • What do they look like? (we did an experiment last week so that we could "see" it)
  • How can we use them?
The challenge was to make a magnet move using the magnetic field, but not actually touching the magnet. Take a look at some of the creative ways our class accomplished this by following the link to all of the videos

Upcoming dates for this week:
Tomorrow: book orders are due (so that they have time to get here for spring break reading!)
Thursday: We Day bake sale ($1 treats)
Friday: Math weekly #8 is due
Next Monday: the newest reading record was handed out today.  All students have until next Monday to complete 5 reflections about their own reading.

It's a perfect day to build a snowman.  Some VERY big snowmen were created through a lot of teamwork and cooperation by students in 5A and 5C!  Take a look at at few here and follow the link to more!

One more reminder for this week: Parent-teacher-student interviews will be taking place Wednesday and Thursday night as well as Friday morning.  Times are set for 20 minutes per family.  Please be prompt and respectful of everyone else's time.  Please also plan to take home your child's portfolio for the night or the weekend to spend more time looking at it in depth and celebrating all of the learning that your child has been doing this year!

In case you have lost track of your time block.  Please take a look at the schedule for your day.
Interview times:
Wednesday
Thursday
Friday
Upcoming assignments this week:
* After taking a break while we worked on a couple of larger reading related assignments, reading records are re-starting.  Students will be handed out a reading record to complete over the course of the week and turn back in each Monday. They are marked on the clarity and completeness of their responses to each prompt.
Thursday:
-Students will begin presenting their Logging Opinion speeches.  In preparation they each need at least three facts that help to support their opinion which they should have found by tomorrow to include during speech writing.
-Spelling assignment #7 is due and we'll have our test Thursday as well.

So proud of all of our great scientists that really showed their understanding on their Chemistry unit test yesterday!  Thanks to all of the wonderful parents that helped to support their child in their studying as well.

Have you heard about our kindness challenge?  With the purpose to spread smiles and happiness our class has come up with a series of challenges to help make everyone's day just a little better! :)
This week's challenge:  To smile, make eye contact and say hi to 5 different people.

Other important dates this week:
Wednesday is our Chemistry unit test.  Study guides to help focus study times went home last Wednesday. Taking a few minutes each day to find the answers (in our science notes) and read over them with be very helpful.  Thanks to any parents that are able to help with studying and asking questions!

Thursday Insect investigation presentations will begin.  This online assignment needs to be completed and printed before then.

Friday: this week's homework assignment will be math weekly #7 due, as always, first thing Friday morning.
